I talked with a Chase agent yesterday who mentioned that Walmart and Target will sometimes code all purchases as groceries. I have yet to verify that myself. He also said that Sam’s Club and Costco do not code purchases as groceries.

In reply to Jim. No, this article is genuine. After reading this article, I clicked on the Chase link and sure enough, the offer for 5x miles for groceries (between Aug 1 - Sep 30th) upto $1,500 per month was activated by Chase.

I think the article is misleading, incomplete, or behind the times. Either way, it is not 100% accurate.

The Chase Freedom card, for the 3rd Q, offers 5% bonus on groceries only from Whole Foods/Amazon. It was during the 2nd Q that the 5% bonus applied to most grocery stores, but that expired at the end of June.

The Chase Freedom card, for the 3rd Q, does appear to give a 5% bonus on purchases from most grocery stores but only to new cardholders. This bonus is not available to current cardholders or cardholders who received a bonus from this card within the last 24 months.
