I spoke w a citi rep and the rep clearly explained that: if i share thankyou points with someone else with the same card (citi premier), then those points subsequently CANNOT BE TRANSFERRED TO ANY PARTNER AIRLINES (!) Terrible policy which is not noted anywhere!

Ah never mind. I called them and they said they will first use the points that are expiring first.

Great blog. I had a quick question as I’m new to Citi TY. So if my spouse transfers points to me I understand I have 90 days to use them. So what if I already have points in my account as well. To make it simple assume I have 100,000 TY points and my wife transfers in 100,000 points.

If I use 100,000 points does it automatically draw from her points first? How do they distinguish?

Eric & Ktc, Citi has confirmed that shared points can still be transferred to airlines as long as the account they are transferred too has a card with that ability. It’s strange that you had problems transferring your points, Eric.

Just curious who you spoke to? I called in twice to Thank You Rewards and spoke to supervisors and got the same answer. I even asked them what the point of sharing points was if you can’t use them on airlines and they couldn’t give me an answer.

Ktc, I reached out to Citi and am waiting for clarification. I’ll let you know once I hear back.

Have you found anything? I am thinking about doing the same, with the intention to transfer the point to airlines. If this is not feasible I wont do it.

My wife earned them as regular credit card spend. I had tried to concert my points plus the transferred to Virgin and it wouldn’t let me transfer all of them. It did let me transfer a few of them though, which they claim was a system error. They tell me the transferred points are coming over as taxable points, which can’t be transferred to airlines. No idea why they are saying they are taxable when they are from regular card spend.

Eric, I’ve never heard of this happening before. And of all the restrictions listed in the terms, that is not one of them. On top of that both of those cards have the ability to transfer to airlines.

I’ll look into and see what I can find out. Do you happen to know how you earned the points that were transferred? If they were earned from a bank account bonus then those points can’t be transferred…but then again they can’t be shared either.
